Frequently Asked Questions
Cabinet Mucus Relief, a FDA-approved generic medicine similar to Mucinex, is a popular over-the-counter (OTC) pill used to temporarily relieve cough and congestion caused by the common cold, hay fever, bronchitis, and other non long-term respiratory illnesses. The active ingredient, guaifenesin, belongs to a group of medications called expectorants. Expectorants work by loosening and thinning phlegm (mucus) present in the lungs and airways. By decreasing the thickness and stickiness of the mucus, Cabinet Mucus Relief makes it easier to cough or spit out mucus from the throat and lungs. Guaifenesin is commonly combined with decongestants, pain relievers, and cough suppressants for overall common cold or flu relief. A great example is Cabinet Daytime Severe Cold & Flu, which contains ingredients that will help relieve aches and pains, sore throat, congestion, mucus, and cough. [Disclaimer: this is not the generic equivalent of brand name Mucinex 12 Hour. While they both contain the same active ingredient, Cabinet Mucus Relief contains guaifenesin 400 mg and is an immediate-release tablet, while Mucinex contains guaifenesin 1200 mg and is a extended-release tablet that releases medication over 12 hours. Cabinet Mucus Relief has different dosing instructions.]
