Medicine Warnings Card BG

Cabinet Pain Reliever and Nighttime Sleep Aid can be an excellent option for those struggling with minor pain or headaches that are accompanied by sleeplessness.

This is a combination pill that contains acetaminophen (for pain) and diphenhydramine (for sleep). Acetaminophen is thought to work by increasing the pain threshold, changing the way your body perceives pain. Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine (used for allergies) that can enter the brain and cause drowsiness. This side effect is what allows for diphenhydramine to work well as an occasional sleep aid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cabinet Pain Reliever & Nighttime Sleep Aid, a generic alternative to Tylenol® PM (or acetaminophen PM), is an over-the-counter (OTC) combination pill used for the temporary relief of pain that is accompanied by sleeplessness. Each tablet contains two medicines, each working to relieve specific symptoms. How each individual ingredient works is explained below:

Acetaminophen: The active ingredient, acetaminophen, belongs to a group of medications called analgesics (pain relievers) and antipyretics (fever reducers). The exact way acetaminophen works in the body is not well known. It may work by decreasing the production of chemicals that cause inflammation, known as prostaglandins. It is also thought that acetaminophen can increase the pain threshold, making it so that more pain would have to develop for before you can feel it. Lastly, acetaminophen can act on the heat-regulating center of the brain (hypothalamus). When your temperature is high, it can tell this center of the brain to cool the body to bring your fever down. It is important to note acetaminophen does not decrease inflammation or swelling, rather it most likely changes the way your body perceives pain. This ingredient is available separately as Cabinet Pain Reliever & Fever Reducer.

Diphenhydramine: The active ingredient, diphenhydramine hcl, belongs to a group of medications called antihistamines. Antihistamines work by blocking the action of histamine, which is a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms and reactions. Some antihistamines, such as diphenhydramine, can enter the brain and cause drowsiness. This side effect is what allows for diphenhydramine to be a great occasional, non-habit forming sleep aid. In addition to helping with sleep, this ingredient also works to relieve symptoms of allergy such as runny nose, sneezing, and watery eyes. Cabinet Pain Reliever and Nighttime Sleep Aid can provide relief for occasional sleeplessness, but is not used for long-term treatment of insomnia. This ingredient is available separately as Cabinet Sleep Aid and Cabinet Allergy Relief.

Cabinet Pain Reliever & Sleep Aid is a medicine used to temporarily relieve occasional headaches and minor aches and pains that are accompanied by sleeplessness. Minor aches and pains can be due to: the common cold, sore throat, headache, back pain, minor arthritis pains, toothache, muscle aches, premenstrual or menstrual cramps, and fever. In addition to working as a sleep aid, the diphenhydramine component of this product can also help relieve symptoms of allergy, allergic reactions, hay fever, and the common cold. These symptoms include: itchiness, hives or rash, itchy or watery eyes, itchy or runny nose, rhinitis (stuffy nose), sinus pressure, coughing, and sneezing.

Adults and children over the age of 12 can take one (1) or two (2) caplets at bedtime as needed for relief of pain and sleeplessness. Do not take more than two (2) caplets of Cabinet Pain Reliever & Sleep Aid in 24 hours. This product is not to be used by children under the age of 12, unless directed by a doctor. Cabinet Sleep Aid is not recommended for long-term use, and should not be used for more than two weeks straight.

Liver Warning: This product contains acetaminophen. Severe liver damage may occur if you take more than 4,000 mg of acetaminophen in 24 hours. It is very important to watch out for other acetaminophen products (OTC and prescription medications) and to make sure additive sources of acetaminophen do not go over 4,000 mg a day. Avoid consuming three or more alcoholic beverages every day while using this product. In the case of an overdose, contact a Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222) or seek medical attention immediately.

Avoid using Cabinet Pain Reliever & Sleep Aid with any other over-the-counter or prescription medicines that contain acetaminophen. Taking too much acetaminophen can cause liver injury. If you are not sure if a medicine has acetaminophen in it, check with a doctor or pharmacist. Some Cabinet medicines that have acetaminophen include: Cabinet Daytime Severe Cold & Flu, Cabinet Tension Headache Relief, and Cabinet Pain Reliever & Fever Reducer.

Do not use Cabinet Pain Reliever & Sleep Aid to make a child feel sleepy. This product also should not be used with any other product that contains diphenhydramine, even one that is used on skin (i.e. topical diphenhydramine cream). Combining diphenhydramine products can cause side effects to add up, so it is best to separate different products by four to six hours. Other than drowsiness, possible side effects of diphenhydramine include dry mouth, constipation, and blurred vision. Older adults may be more prone to these side effects.

Lastly, do not use Cabinet Pain Reliever & Sleep Aid if you have ever had an allergic reaction to any ingredient in this product.

It is important to check in with your doctor or healthcare provider before taking Cabinet Pain Reliever & Sleep Aid if you have liver disease, a breathing problem (such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis), glaucoma, or trouble urinating as a result of an enlarged prostate gland.

If you are currently taking a blood thinner called warfarin, sedatives, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, or any other medications that make you sleepy or have sedative effects, ask a doctor or local pharmacist prior to taking using this product.

The two main ingredients of Cabinet Pain Reliver & Nighttime Sleep Aid, acetaminophen and diphenhydramine, are both generally considered to be safe to use while pregnant or breastfeeding. However, the benefits and risks of using this product should still be evaluated by your healthcare provider.

You should stop using Cabinet Pain Reliever & Sleep Aid and seek medical advice from a health care professional if you notice:

  • Pain that is worsening or lasts for more than 10 days

  • Fever that is worsening or lasts for more than three days

  • New symptoms or pain that occur

  • Redness or swelling

  • Sleeplessness that persists for more than two weeks

These presentations could be signs of a more serious medical condition or infection. Cabinet Pain Reliever & Sleep Aid is recommended for temporary pain relief and associated sleeplessness. If you suffer from chronic pain, refer to your doctor for pain management resources.

It is recommended to avoid alcoholic drinks while you are taking Cabinet Pain Reliever & Sleep Aid. Mixing acetaminophen and alcohol can potentially lead to liver damage, while mixing diphenhydramine and alcohol can result in significant drowsiness.

In addition to its desired effects, Cabinet Pain Reliever & Sleep Aid may cause some less desirable side effects. While the acetaminophen component of this medicine does not really have any side effects, the diphenhydramine component does have some notable side effects. Everyone is different, so some people may experience no side effects at all, others may experience mild side effects, and a small number of people may experience rare or more serious adverse effects.

Some side effects of diphenhydramine include: dry mouth/nose/throat, sleepiness, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation, headache, nervousness, muscle weakness. Call your doctor immediately is you experience any vision problems, difficulty urinating, or painful urination. Some patients may experience side effects that are not on this list. Older adults may be more prone to the side effects of diphenhydramine. Check in with your health care provider or local pharmacist if you have questions or experience serious side effects.

Although rare, call 9-1-1 or seek medical help immediately if you develop a serious allergic reaction to this product. Symptoms of a very serious reaction include: rash, skin reddening, blisters, itching or swelling (usually in the face, tongue, and throat), severe dizziness, and difficulty breathing.

In the case of an overdose, contact a Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222) or seek medical attention immediately. Signs of overdose may include: nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, sweating, stomach pain, yellowing of the eyes/skin, dark urine, and extreme fatigue.
