Medicine Warnings Card BG

Experiencing a lot of sleepless nights? Cabinet Sleep Aid is a commonly recommended sleep aid option.

The active ingredient, diphenhydramine, is an antihistamine that works by blocking the substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms and reactions. Some antihistamines can also enter the brain and cause drowsiness. This side effect is what allows for diphenhydramine to be a great occasional, non-habit forming sleep aid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cabinet Sleep Aid, a generic alternative to Unisom®, is a popular over-the-counter sleep aid (OTC sleep aid) used to relieve sleeplessness. The active ingredient, diphenhydramine hcl, belongs to a group of medications called antihistamines. Antihistamines work by blocking the action of histamine, which is a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms and reactions. Some antihistamines, such as diphenhydramine, can enter the brain and cause drowsiness. This side effect is what allows for diphenhydramine to be a great occasional, non-habit forming sleep aid. In addition to helping with sleep, Cabinet Sleep Aid also works to relieve symptoms of allergy such as runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes. This product can provide relief for occasional sleeplessness, but is not used for long-term treatment of insomnia.

Adults and children over the age of 12 can take one (1) softgel at bedtime as needed for relief of occasional sleeplessness. Do not take more than one (1) dose of Cabinet Sleep Aid in 24 hours, unless your doctor told you to. This product is not to be used by children under the age of 12.

Cabinet Sleep Aid is not recommended for long-term use, and should not be used for more than two weeks straight.

Good to know: While Cabinet Allergy Relief (generic Benadryl generally used for allergies) contains 25 mg of diphenhydramine, Cabinet Sleep Aid (generic Unisom generally used as an OTC sleep medicine) contains 50 mg of diphenhydramine.

Do not use Cabinet Sleep Aid to make a child feel sleepy. Cabinet Sleep Aid softgels should not be used with any other product that contains diphenhydramine, even one that is used on skin (i.e. topical diphenhydramine cream). Combining diphenhydramine products can cause side effects to add up, so it is best to separate different products by four to six hours. Other than drowsiness, possible side effects of diphenhydramine include dry mouth, constipation, and blurred vision. Older adults may be more prone to the side effects of diphenhydramine.

It is important to check in with your doctor or healthcare provider before taking Cabinet Sleep Aid if you have:

  • A breathing problem, such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis

  • Glaucoma

  • Trouble urinating as a result of an enlarged prostate gland

If you are currently taking sedatives, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, or any other medications that make you sleepy or have sedative effects, ask a doctor or local pharmacist prior to taking any tablets.

Stop using Cabinet Sleep Aid if you experience insomnia or trouble sleeping continuously for more than two weeks. This product can be a short-term option for better sleep, but not a treatment for chronic insomnia or sleep problems. Sleeplessness that is present for a long time may be a symptom of something more serious.

Combining alcohol with diphendydramine can result in significant drowsiness, which can put you in a dangerous situation. You should avoid alcoholic drinks while taking Cabinet Sleep Aid.

Cabinet Sleep Aid is generally considered to be safe during pregnancy. Similarly, low doses of diphenhydramine are generally considered to be safe while breastfeeding. However, some of the medication can get into breast milk and affect your breastfeeding infant. It is important to seek medical advice from your doctor prior to taking Cabinet Sleep Aid if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

In addition to its desired effects, diphenhydramine may cause some less desirable side effects. Everyone is different, so some people may experience no side effects at all, others may experience mild side effects, and a small number of people may experience rare or more serious adverse effects.

Some side effects of diphenhydramine include: dry mouth/nose/throat, sleepiness, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation, headache, nervousness, muscle weakness. Call your doctor immediately is you experience any vision problems, difficulty urinating, or painful urination. Some patients may experience side effects that are not on this list. Older adults may be more prone to the side effects of diphenhydramine. Check in with your health care provider or local pharmacist if you have questions or experience serious side effects.

Always check with your doctor or pharmacist prior to taking Cabinet Sleep Aid if you have ever had an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients the product contains.

Good to know: If you are looking for a more natural sleep remedy, Cabinet Natural Sleep Aid (melatonin) may be a good option.
