Frequently Asked Questions

Furosemide can interact with some medicines and supplements. It’s always recommended to provide both your doctor and pharmacy with an updated list of everything you’re taking to identify any potential drug interactions.

Some medicines and supplements furosemide can interact with include:

  • Lithium

  • Aminoglycoside antibiotics: gentamicin, tobramycin

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): ibuprofen, naproxen

  • Digoxin

  • Antihypertensive medications

This list doesn’t represent all the drugs that may interact with furosemide. If you’re unsure whether a certain drug or supplement can be taken with furosemide, speak with your doctor or pharmacist. The FDA also has a helpful medication guide for furosemide here.

If you accidentally miss your dose of Furosemide, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose (within 2 hours), skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the usual time. Don't take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses.

Furosemide may be taken with or without food.

During pregnancy: Furosemide may cause harm to the fetus. Other diuretics may be preferred.

While breastfeeding: Furosemide passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider for alternative options.

It’s important to manage fluid retention and hypertension during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as uncontrolled conditions can have negative effects. Always let your provider know if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, so you can discuss the risks and benefits of starting or continuing furosemide.

It's generally recommended to avoid excessive alcohol consumption while taking furosemide, as it can enhance the risk of dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.
