Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Atorvastatin can interact with some medicines and supplements. It’s always recommended to provide both your doctor and pharmacy with an updated list of everything you’re taking to identify any potential drug interactions.

Some medicines and supplements atorvastatin can interact with include:

  • Cyclosporine

  • Fibrates: gemfibrozil, fenofibrate

  • Protease inhibitors

  • Certain antibiotics: clarithromycin, erythromycin

  • Antifungal medications: itraconazole, ketoconazole

  • Warfarin

  • Digoxin

This list doesn’t represent all the drugs that may interact with atorvastatin. If you’re unsure whether a certain drug or supplement can be taken with atorvastatin, speak with your doctor or pharmacist. The FDA also has a helpful medication guide for atorvastatin here.

If you accidentally miss your dose of Atorvastatin, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose (within 12 hours), skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the usual time. Don't take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses.

Atorvastatin may be taken with or without food.

During pregnancy: Atorvastatin may cause harm to the fetus. Other cholesterol-lowering medications may be preferred.

While breastfeeding: It's not recommended to use atorvastatin while breastfeeding. Consult your healthcare provider for alternative options.

It’s important to manage cholesterol levels during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as uncontrolled high cholesterol can have negative effects. Always let your provider know if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, so you can discuss the risks and benefits of starting or continuing treatment.

Moderate alcohol consumption is generally acceptable while taking atorvastatin. However, it's advisable to consult with your healthcare provider regarding your individual circumstances.
