DayQuil is a brand of over-the-counter (OTC) medicine that's used to relieve the symptoms of the common cold and flu, including:

  • headache

  • fever

  • sore throat

  • minor aches and pains

  • nasal congestion or sinus pressure

  • cough

It's available in several different forms, including liquid, capsules, and LiquiCaps (similar to softgels). DayQuil is also available in a combination product called NyQuil, which is used to relieve symptoms of the common cold and flu at night.

DayQuil is a combination medicine that contains three different active ingredients, each working to relieve different symptoms of the common cold or flu. These active ingredients are:

  • Acetaminophen, a pain reliever and fever reducer that's thought to work by elevating the body's threshold for pain and acting on a region of the brain that regulates temperature.

  • Dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant that works by changing the way the brain responds to coughing.

  • Phenylephrine, a nasal decongestant which works by narrowing blood vessels in the nasal passages, helping to relieve congestion.

It's important to follow the dosing instructions on the package and not to exceed the recommended dose. Taking more than the recommended dose of DayQuil can cause adverse side effects or even acetaminophen overdose. If your symptoms don't improve after taking DayQuil for a few days, you should stop taking the medication and consult with your doctor. This could be a sign of a more serious infection.

DayQuil is generally considered safe for most adults and children over the age of 12 to use. However, there are a few groups of people who shouldn't take DayQuil. Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the active (or inactive) ingredients in DayQuil. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also consult with their doctor before taking DayQuil. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before starting any new medication if you have pre-existing medical conditions and are taking other medicines.
